Street photography inspiration from Stephane Paquet

Living in a city of 2 million people, I quickly discovered that I didn’t have to drive to the country to find interesting subjects to photograph. Street photography was, at first, convenient (considering that I didn’t have a car at the time) but it has become my favorite kind of photography. I love this art because of its immediacy. Just outside my apartment, any time of the day, any time of the year, people walk, chat and wait… people smoke, bike and beg.. people scream, yawn, and frown… making the city vibrant with life… making the city the best of places for a photographer without a car.

Yet, I am still struggling with certain aspects of this art. The confrontational aspect of candid street portraits, for instance, will always remain an issue. While I have developed a number of (dishonest) techniques to avoid getting into trouble, I have learned to take advantage of the confrontation by exploring various kinds of eye contacts. The choice of lens (wide or telephoto) as well as of shooting technique (from-the-hip or through-the-viewer) are other elements of street photography that certainly keep me busy as I juggle with their full range of possibilities.” ~ Stephane Paquet from Montreal, Canada
